Introduction
The Maharashtra government has announced a ₹850 crore project to improve Solapur’s water supply system. The aim is simple: to give every home in the city safe drinking water every single day. This upgrade is set to change daily life for thousands of people and improve living standards across the city.
Project Details
Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis launched the project, explaining that the ₹850 crore will be used to modernize Solapur’s internal water network. Once finished, water will reach every household on a regular basis.
This new effort adds to an earlier project worth ₹842 crore—the Ujani–Solapur parallel pipeline. That pipeline, built under the Smart City initiative with support from NTPC, the state government, and the Solapur Municipal Corporation (SMC), brings water directly from the Ujani Dam. It includes a 170 MLD (million liters per day) pipeline and a 60 MLD treatment plant, which together will help meet Solapur’s daily need of around 250 MLD. The pipeline is already in its trial phase.
Why This Matters
- Less Wastage – The new system will replace old, leaky water channels and reduce water loss.
- Water Every Day – Homes across Solapur will finally have 24/7 access to clean drinking water, a major step for public health.
- Long-Term Security – The stronger network will make Solapur more resilient against droughts and rising demand.
Behind the Numbers: ₹842 Cr vs. ₹850 Cr
Project | Cost (₹ crore) | Purpose |
---|---|---|
Ujani–Solapur Pipeline | 842 | Brings water from Ujani Dam through a 170 MLD pipeline + 60 MLD plant |
Internal Distribution Upgrade | 850 | Rebuilds city’s internal network for reliable 24/7 household supply |
Together, these projects form a two-step solution: first bringing water to the city, then making sure it reaches every tap.
What’s Next
- Trial Phase – The Ujani–Solapur pipeline is being tested before full launch.
- Area Priorities – The SMC will focus first on neighborhoods that face the worst water shortages.
- Maintenance Matters – Regular care of the new network will ensure it lasts for years.
- Community Role – Awareness about saving water and fair billing will help keep the system strong.
Conclusion
The ₹850 crore Solapur water project is more than an upgrade—it’s a promise of a better future. Alongside the Ujani–Solapur pipeline, it will bring safe, reliable drinking water to every household, every day. With strong planning and community support, Solapur can become a model city for water management in India.
